Welcome to Barbara's B&B
Wake every morning to the aroma of west coast ocean on the breeze and curious deer in the forest’s periphery. This south-facing, private bed and breakfast is a retreat for those seeking quietude and nature’s inspiration and a base for those wanting to explore Cortes Island’s diverse landscape and community.
Savour Barbara’s full organic breakfast on the deck with an ocean view of historic Whaletown Bay. “Fresh and homemade” is the motto in Barbara’s kitchen. Your breakfast will be a delectable spread of her breads, jams and pastries. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are picked daily from her garden and orchard. Expect to be well nourished!
The B&B’s private entrance leads guests through the showroom filled with hand-knotted Nepalese carpets and into a brand new, custom-built suite with a private patio. Suitable for two, the accommodations are on their own level, separate from the living area. Elegant features include an en suite bathroom with heated floor and towel bars and wood trim from island fir. You’ll sleep deeply in the queen size bed and the natural darkness of Cortes Island. For those with allergies and sensitivities, Barbara takes special care to provide a fragrance-free environment. Clean, bright and airy, Barbara’s bed and breakfast offers so much more than a peaceful place to sleep. Free Wifi provided in your suite.
Is the B&B booked, are you with friends/family or are you looking for something rustic? See the Garden Cabin for additional accommodation on the property.
Find Barbara’s bed and breakfast on five acres of privacy and quiet only a minute’s drive from the ferry. Nestled between forest and sea, guests are welcome to enjoy the seclusion of the sun-warmed, mossy rock bluffs or the windswept woods during the day. Guests who are called by the allure of wildness and nature will find adventure in the nearby trails into Carrington Bay and Von Donop Inlet. The Whaletown Commons has shorter and less strenuous trails. In fact, Cortes Island is abundant with hiking and walking routes.
Visitors have ample opportunity to merge with nature by kayak, either for independent paddlers or for those wanting to join a guided group. Cortes Island is an explorer’s paradise. Located at the gateway to Desolation Sound, the island has a relatively undeveloped west side, undeveloped east shores and small islands speckled around its shorelines.
From Barbara’s accommodations, the clear, green waters of Manson’s Lagoon, which beckon swimmers and marine lovers alike, are only a mere 20-minute drive away. Those seeking a day on the lake will venture a similar distance to the sandy beaches of Hague Lake park. Smelt Bay Provincial Park on the south end boasts an expansive, sandy beach and shallow, gentle waters. By night, you can enjoy the ocean in a different way: bio-luminescence and starry skies will touch your trip with their magic.
For those who like to be where the action is, Gorge Harbour Marina is minutes away by car where you can find a restaurant, pool, hot tub, and store. Throughout the summer, the marina regularly offers free events and music. Restaurants and cafés can also be found on the south end of Cortes Island, 20 minutes away.
Throughout the spring and summer, you have a choice of lively markets where vendors sell a wide range of specialty foods and crafts, among other delights. Every Friday, an indoor‒outdoor market invigorates Manson’s Landing. Outdoor markets spring up in the Gorge on Saturdays and at Squirrel Cove on Sundays.
Close enough to the ferry for a timely departure, yet still set far enough away to feel remote and secluded, this Cortes Island bed and breakfast offers an intriguing combination of the island’s best. You’re welcome to rest, wake and dine in quietude while taking in the stunning tranquility at Barbara’s.
